5 - 5:20 p.m. - The Story of Stuff

From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between environmental and social issues, and calls us to create a more sustainable and just world. It just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.

5:30 - 6:30 p.m. - Energy on Trial

energy on trialThis film by local sailing expert and video producer Gary Jobson is a critical reevaluation of new nuclear, fossil fuels, and renewables. | Jobson bio

Energy on Trial tackles a subject as vital to us as the air we breathe and the nourishment we require. But the way much of it is produced is terminally damaging to our environment and to our health.

In a refreshingly objective, straightforward manner, this film addresses what has become a complex, global conundrum, a political hot potato. Energy on Trial presents the energy source groups one by one, evaluating each on the basis of cost, efficiency, environmental impact, and future potential. Along the way, an impressive array of experts from the scientific, academic, political, and business communities, is heard from.

Energy on Trial concludes that while some day we will surely rely on solar to provide the majority of our power, and while in the interim we will require all forms of energy to meet increased, imminent demands, the role of new nuclear power must be substantially augmented to shoulder the immense base load we require. And this must be done quickly. As one scientist put it, “the environment can’t wait.”

The unmistakable secondary message of Energy on Trial is this: get involved. This film reminds us that a democracy is set up to do what we, the people, want. Learning about energy will help us all make well-considered decisions about power for our local communities, and for a successful national energy policy.

6:30 - 7:30 p.m. - Panel Discussion Follows Energy on Trial

Gary Jobson will moderate a panel of distinguished energy experts including:

The Annapolis Green Film Fest is a production of Elvia Thompson, founder of AnnapolisGreen.com, a website portal to all things environmental in the Annapolis area – also the virtual home of Green Drinks Annapolis – and local insurance executive and environmental activist Paul Murphy.

“Our goal in bringing the Annapolis area this series of mini-film fests is to bring attention to environmental issues,” said Film Fest co-producer Elvia Thompson. “We also want people to be moved to take action."

“Film is the perfect media to drive home the issues,” said Paul Murphy, Film Fest co-producer. “We hope folks will enjoy spending a cold Saturday evening in the warmth of St. John's College, learning and being entertained too.”
