Smithsonian Environmental Research Center SERC

Its Mission: The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) leads the Nation in research on linkages of land and water ecosystems in the coastal zone and provides society with knowledge to meet critical environmental challenges in the 21st century.

SERC is a global leader for research focused on connections among ecosystems in the coastal zone. Director Hines oversees a diverse staff of 17 senior scientists and an interdisciplinary team of more than 180 researchers, technicians and students who conduct long-term descriptive and experimental research on global change, landscape ecology, ecosystems in coastal regions, and population and community ecology.

SERC research extends far beyond our home base on the Chesapeake Bay. Their scientists use comparisons across latitudes to test the effects of atmospheric, climatic and biological gradients. Education and public programs are major components of their programs with year-round tours and classes (including distance learning) for kids and adults.

SERC is a fabulous asset to those of living in the Chesapeake watershed.

West River Cruises

The Richard Lee, a USCG inspected, 110-passenger tour boat, operated by West River Cruises. They host charters, environmental and history tours, and a limited schedule of public cruises from their homeport of Discovery Village on the Shady Side Peninsula - 15 miles south of Annapolis.

The Richard Lee (previously named the Capt Evans) was purchased from the original owner, Captain Gordon Evans of Reedville, Va. She was custom built for passenger service in Reedville at the Jennings Boat Yard by Raymond Bray and his brother. The Richard Lee is a 65-foot, 21 foot beam, 60 ton, tour boat powered by 2 Detroit Diesel 6-71’s providing an average speed of 8 knots. She is one of the last large wooden passenger vessels built on the Chesapeake Bay. She is built of massive timbers and wood species that would be difficult to reproduce today.

The classic Chesapeake Bay built Richard Lee restores tour & passenger service on the beautiful West & Rhode Rivers of Maryland -- the first since the historic Emma Giles steam ship provided service for the rural communities along the Bay. Her shallow, 3.5 foot draft allows access to the scenic creeks and the upper and lower decks are perfect to enjoy the beautiful scenery and the historic small towns along the rivers.
